Stop snacking in the evening!
Its early evening, the kids have gone to bed you collapse onto the sofa and then it starts…. the munchies! You sit there thinking ‘what can i have to eat, i shouldn’t but i really fancy something!’ So you go on the hunt for either sweet or savoury snacks that you believe can satisfy this craving.
This scenario is so so common, how many people do you know say to you, ‘ i’m ok in the daytime, but as soon as i’m sitting down at night im thinking of food!’ It doesn’t have to be this way. Stop the snacking and stop the tummy flab. But how? After spending many years talking to clients with exactly this same problem I have put together some tips and tools which will help you overcome this dreaded behaviour!
Tips on how to stop snacking at night
1. Close the kitchen.
This may sound daft but you just try it. When you have finished your evening meal make a concious effort to tidy the kitchen, put everything away where it should be. Then before retiring to the lounge TURN OFF THE LIGHTS and CLOSE THE DOOR and say to yourself THE KITCHEN IS NOW CLOSED. One client of mine took this to the next level and actually made a sign for the kitchen door, so if they were tempted they would walk to the kitchen and see the sign, which would interrupt their thoughts and changed their behaviour.
2. Clean your teeth.
This ones great… After you have finished your evening meal make it the norm to go and brush your teeth. By doing this makes you feel all nice clean and refreshed and curbs the desire to put anything else in your mouth til morning.
3. Squirt lemon juice in your mouth!
You know the squirty lemon juice you can get, we use it on our pancakes once a year. Well this stuff is fab to stop cravings of any type (including smoking) get into the habit of having one next to you and if you have the urge give a little squirt into your mouth and be astounded at how this stuff stops you wanting!
4. Water, water, water
how could i possibly do a list and leave out the best thing that your body needs. when you are sitting down at night have a bottle of water sitting next to you and sip, sip, sip, whenver you have a craving just have a sip of water first and ask yourself, ‘do i really want something to eat?’
5. Plan your snacking
The other day i made the decision to have a trifle at night whilst watching TV, i made this decision in the morning and i planned to eat it, let me tell you it tasted so good and i really enjoyed it! If you are going to snack plan it, make an arrangement with your mind well before the evening of the activity what you are going to do, whether it is to have a snack and if so,what is it and what time can you have it,or if you have chosen to not snack that night, DON’T . You create your own rules in your own mind. This way you will be in more control of what you are doing.
6. Never eat standing up!
if you are going to eat sit down and do it… get rid of the mindset of eating on the go. make a concious effort today that every time you eat no matter what it is.SIT DOWN. lets make munching mindful.
7. Use crockery
even if you eating a bag of crisps, put the crisps into a bowl or use a plate, chop up chocolate bars, prepare your snack and treat it like a meal (if you are going to have one, make it count) by doing this makes you eat slower and makes you think more about what you are doing.
8. Choose complicated foods!
what i mean by this is if you choose a food which requires a little bit of extra effort before you eat it you will eat less and take more time. Take an orange for example, you have to peel it before you can eat it. Fruit is great for this. Mango and papaya, choose good snack foods and see and feel the difference. Not only will fruit speed up your metabolism but it will increase your Vitamin C levels which is all good news for people on a weight loss journey.
Just remember it’s your mind that puts your hand in the fridge!
